| Slight miscalculation
Today was a generally absent-minded ridiculous jenny day. I woke up thinking I had something at noon, but I couldn't remember what, and checked my calendar. Of course I hadn't written anything in, so I just thought it was this meeting for a student group, so I go to that. 12:30 rolls around.. I check my email.. and of course I was supposed to meet with a prospective professor for a summer rotation! oops. that's the THIRD time i've stood up or been late to a thing with a prof because I've been lame.
ok not that interesting or funny. but it just adds to the failure of a day i had =P I then decide to run an errand. I had to drop off a video I borrowed from a doctor I shadowed last quarter, and his office is 30 minutes away. Of course I'm running low on gas, but I know I'll have *just* enough to get to his office, where there's a station with cheap gas. But of course once I pull into the station after driving 20 some odd miles with the gas indicator light on, I realize I had left both my phone and wallet in my jacket--which was at home. No cash, no cards! Let the sweating begin. Thankfully I randomly had my checkbook in my bag, and begged the station owner to let me write her a check for a gallon or two. stupid me. she made a big fuss and wrote down my license plate and all.. but atleast i got home.
And then later that evening i proceed to type my password into a friend's im window =) yay me.
Random med school fun fact: Pepcid/Zantac for flush and hangovers?
Could these antacids really prevent "Asian flush?" Hangovers?
Mayhaps. In our Pharmacology lecture today, we learned that ethanol
stimulates gastric acid secretion. It also dilates blood vessels, hence the flush (and headaches!). Contaminants
("fusels") generated during various fermentation processes and from
your body's formation of acetaldehyde are large contributors to hangover.
These fusels contribute to the different flavors of drinks, and different drinks have different amounts.; vodka has the least (~10 ppm) while branch and scotch have the most (~1000 ppm). Beer and wine are in the middle at 100 and 500 ppm, respectively.
So then, why would taking pepcid or zantac help? Presumptively, lowering the acid load in your stomach would decrease the feeling of nausea and gastritis. But the flush? I'm not so sure there's a direct biological explanation... But people say it works..... who knows =P

| I now have 8 fewer teeth then I did in elementary school! Four molars gone for braces in middle school.. and as of yesterday... my four wisdom teeth are out too. Thankfully, not much pain,.. just blood. I'll spare you the pictures of my bloody gauze. They were rather nasty.
The actual operation took less than an hour. Here's my puffy face a few hours later... can you spot the gauze?

And here are my wisdoms.... one of them was fully impacted so they had to crack it to get it out. yum yum.
The plan is to drive back San Diego on the 2nd right after my post-op exam. Until then... at home in the bay area. |

| Fun fact from Cell and Molecular class:
The name for "Tide" laundry detergent comes from the detergent lipid molecule "lysophophatide" which forms micelles in water.
